Flash Fiction 5

Home Page

FlashFiction5 is a group of five authors who have written a collection of flash fiction stories which is now available.  The title of the anthology is Flash Tales--an Adventure in Words.

Flash fiction is very short fiction which tells a story in a limited number of words and usually includes all the elements of a good fiction story--characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution.  And it often has a twist at the end.

For this collection, our authors have chosen a word limit of 100 words or less.  And these stories have an additional element not seen in other flash fiction collections.  These authors each chose a word at random, shared their words, and each wrote a story using all five words or a form of the words.  Using this method and twenty different lists of words, in this volume they present one hundred stories.

They expected their stories to all be alike.  But no!  Their creative minds went in varied directions, and the stories represent
many genres--romance, suspense, children's, historical, adventure, etc.

So if you are rushing around in this busy world, love to read but have just a minute, grab their new book, jump in, and read a story!
And if you have a few more minutes, use the "Now You Try" page, use the word list provided, and write a story of your own!

      FLASH TALES--An Adventure in Words

This collection presents one hundred stories, each short enough to read in a flash, in just a minute! Each consists of one hundred words or less and includes characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution.  And many end with an unexpected twist.

The five authors of the stories are Diane Neal, Joan Sikes, Janda Raker, Dianne Sagan, and Mary Barbara Gendusa-Yokum.  These stories were created from a writing exercise.  Each author selected a word at random--just any word.  Then they shared their words, and each author wrote a story using those words or a form of the words.  Thus, they crafted five stories, all based on or including the same words.  They had expected all the stories to be similar.  But no!  The stories ranged from romance to adventure, from children's to literary, and many other genres.

The authors repeated that process twenty times and produced one hundred stories for this volume.  The stories are presented here for the reader's enjoyment.  And at the end of each set of five stories based on a common word list, there is a "Now You Try" page where the reader is invited to write a story of her or his own creation, using those same words!
